December 2017 There was a guy walking his dog up, again not sure I would feel comfortable taking a dog up unless it was a Cerberus or something equally legendary, but that's up to you. Ben Nevis has 1300m of ascent and descent in those 16km. February 2016
July 2017 October 2020 June 2017 March 2019 The upper half has more small, loose rocks on the path and more random, irregular rocks scattered about. Thank you, angel .

0 0. Half way up we were basically inside a rain cloud and the wind picked up a gale which actually managed to blow me (6ft 3 and 16stone) around on the path. Firstly, the Mountain Path route is 11 miles from the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre, so I suggest getting used to walking at least 10 miles on a regular basis. If you're lucky with the weather like we were then you'll be spoilt for the view at the top.

Passing a big waterfall we continue to walk and walk and more walk with more and more stunning views until we came to the unexpected snow (as we are in the middle of the legendary horror film from 80ies The Fog).

“How hard is Ben Nevis?” and “Is Ben Nevis harder than Snowdon?” are questions we often get asked.

March 2018 For all three peaks you always get people saying "don't even think about going up with walking sticks/map/compass/bear grylls/other silly equipment that you would probably only use on Everest" I didn't use sticks, I bought a map and a compass - didn't use it.

Answer Save.

If you're moderately fit you do not need sticks.

March 2016 It rained continuously the entire way up. May 2016 The mountain path is extremely well built and even at the top, there are cairns that clearly mark the paths course. By clicking on or navigating the site, you agree to our use of cookies.

Those combined with the sense of achievement you get when you reach the highest point in the UK make it all worth while. We went early to avoid the bigger crowds and so had a path that wasn't clogged with tourists as we have had before! (From Pen y Pass on the Pyg Track there is 870m of ascent over 5.9km.).

To say it was dreadful on our climb would be an understatement.

October 2015. This is the version of our website addressed to speakers of English in United Kingdom. Unless the weather is bad/ visibility is poor/ it is dark, you do not need a map or a compass.

Waterproof gear is a must and I would suggest phones go in waterproof pouches. and whats the next step in mountain climing after this. The views on a clear day, I imagine, are probably breath taking. Now standing at a massive 1,345 metres, Ordnance Survey (OS) has calculated the mountain to be bigger than the previous recorded height measured in 1949.

And have £4 in change ready - the card payment facility wasn't working, and you can't rely on the visitor centre / shop to have change - they get a lot of requests for it!As for the difficulty - it is doable for someone of average fitness, but prepare properly, check the weather, and respect your own limits, whatever they might be.

All in all a very tough but very worthwhileClimb, I'm glad I've done it! Mount Snowdon 1,085 metres. May 2020 February 2019

People don't tend to hang around at the top because of the cold, but if there is a gap in the cloud, the views are worth the trog.

If you start in Llanberis at 110m above sea level, the height gain is 990m and the distance is 7.3km each way. Scafell Pike 978 metres. Find all the transport options for your trip from Ben Nevis to Snowdon right here.

I needed 10 hours for going up and down...But every step was worth of the view!

I would suggest that unless you have action men as children, this ones not suitable.

July 2018 May 2017

I climbed the Ben this weekend with my girlfriend and thought I'd drop a review in because I felt that the information I wanted wasn't there when I was looking. June 2018 The surface of the path is dry and mostly very good.

January 2019

After a short rest at the top, we soon discover that walking down is just as hard work and possibly sorer than climbing up, especially as we will be walking down for 3 or 4 hours.

February 2017 June 2016 On the descent our waterproof gear was saturated and was no longer working. September 2018 January 2016 Descend from the mountain was a bit tricky for me beacuse Im clumsy, but on thw way up one girl borrowed me her walking stick which was very usefull on the way down. First up, I've climbed both Scaffell Pike and Snowdon via the Watkins path (second hardest ascent), Ben Nevis exceeded both of these in terms of fitness requirements and we went up on the 'tourist/mountain path' which is regarded as the easiest path up.

Coming down is hard on the knees - sticks are a must but the views stay great for the whole walk. We all know that walking up will be hard work, and we are right. July 2016

So, Ben Nevis is about one third bigger than Snowdon if you walk the Llanberis path.

Group Walk up Ben Nevis from Fort William. Yes, you get great views, and a sense of triumph when you get to the top, but the long treck back down is very uncomfortable.

October 2016 The small rocks also push into the soles of your shoes, so sturdy soled shoes or boots are best. June 2020

On the top we were honored with the best view ever and with little bird tweeting and flying around. September 2017 January 2020 I was as wet as if I had jumped into a pool. Kilimanjaro 5,895 metres. The path up Ben Nevis is not as steep as the steps in a building but you can perhaps get an idea of what is involved by walking up the tallest building you can find or walking up a few flights of stairs lots of times.

While still not quite Everest proportions, the tallest mountain in Britain is now officially one metre taller than previously thought.
